    • A balanced diet is important for the health and development of a child if the child is to flourish and enjoy good health. A balanced diet means a diet that has food items from all the major food groups. There are five major food groups which are grains, vegetables, fruits, dairy and meat and meat alternatives. A balanced diet strikes a balance amongst these five food groups and gives the body the right amount of nutrients that it needs for overall good health.

    • Eating a balanced diet is not about having one good meal. It is about creating healthy eating habits for a child and and maintaining those habits over a period of time and on into adulthood.

    • It is not at all an easy thing to do. Irregular eating habits can have small, mediocre to devastating side effects on the human body. The most common problem with western eating habits is that people eat three large meals in a day and a lot of snacks in between to end those hunger cravings. Now most of these snacks are refined processed carbohydrate foods.

    • Refined processed carbohydrates contain a high amount of sugars, fats and chemical preservatives used to preserve the food. It simple terms, it is unhealthy. This can lead to weight gain, obesity, diabetes type 2, and other diet related diseases appearing in childhood (or later as an adult). Many people fail to recognize the effects of these type of foods.

  • Answer:

    Iron deficiency.

The characteristic symptoms of too little iron are lethargy, tiredness, apathy, reduced brain function, pallor, headache, heart enlargement, and spoon-shaped nails.

The best way to diagnose it is by blood tests. Anemia (low red blood cells) is characteristic, usually with small red blood cells (microcytosis). If anemia is found the cause should be investigated by tests of iron stores. The serum ferritin is said to be the best test of over-all iron stores but it can be falsely elevated in inflammatory conditions (such as autoimune and infectious diseases) and the values many labs list as low normal may actually reflect deficiency. Measuring the serum iron level, total iron binding capacity (TIBC) and calculated the iron saturation can help distinguish true iron deficicency from iron sequestration due to inflammation.

  • Answer: a balanced diet is where you eat the right amount of food at the right time
  • Answer: A balance diet includes foods from all the six classes of food groups.

An unbalanced diet is the exclusion or avoidance of particular food groups in favor of only a few food groups, AND by such exclusion or avoidance the person is not getting the required amounts of minerals and vitamins directly from foods. Vegetarians can make up some needed nutrients through careful selection of alternatives that omit meat and dairy. However, vegetarian diets continue to draw debates, and some people choose a non-meat vegetarian diet with dairy (milk and cheese which does not require a cow to be killed). Vegetarians must also get enough proteins through nuts etc.

Almost all humans consume an "unbalanced" diet. We eat too much fast food and processed food. We eat less fresh vegetables, especially bright veggies like beets, green beans, etc. Some people dislike milk and cheese so their protein intake is low. People shied away from eggs, an excellent source of protein, to reduce cholesterol, so they too need more protein in meat and nuts. Though vitamins give a boost to unbalanced diets, vitamins cannot make up for everything foods give.
